Refrigerator Repair Usually Starts Quietly

Almost nobody calls us on the day a refrigerator stops. They call two weeks later, once the milk has started turning early and the freezer has grown a shell of frost across the back wall. Refrigerator repair is cheapest exactly in that window — while the cabinet is still cooling and only one part has drifted out of tolerance.

A+ Appliance Repair and Maintenance covers refrigeration across Chicago and DuPage County: freestanding French-door units, side-by-sides, counter-depth cabinets, built-in columns and integrated panel-ready installations.

What the Symptom Is Actually Telling You

A refrigerator is four systems sharing one cabinet: a sealed cooling circuit, air circulation, a defrost cycle and the electronics that referee between them. Almost every fault is one of them slipping, and the symptom names which.

What you noticeWhere we look first
Fresh food warm, freezer still coldEvaporator fan or the damper between compartments
Frost building on the back wall of the freezerDefrost heater, sensor or the adaptive defrost control
Water pooling under the crisper drawersDrain tube frozen at the outlet — a known pattern on French-door cabinets
Runs constantly, never satisfiesCondenser fouled, condenser fan, or door gaskets no longer sealing
Both compartments warm, compressor silentStart relay, inverter board or the compressor itself
Clicking every few minutesStart relay cycling on overload protection

The order matters commercially as much as technically: a fan or a sensor is a modest repair, a sealed system is not. We test in that order so you are never quoted the expensive answer before the cheap one has been ruled out.

The Drain Tube Problem, Specifically

If the ice is under the crisper drawers rather than on the freezer wall, the defrost cycle is working and the melt water has nowhere to go. The drain tube ices at its outlet, water backs up and finds the compartment floor, then the kitchen floor.

Clearing it with hot water buys a few months. The permanent repair is the manufacturer drain heater kit — a small element that keeps the tube above freezing. If a company clears your drain and does not mention the kit, expect to call them again before the year is out.

Refrigeration We Repair

  • French-door, side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators
  • Counter-depth and panel-ready cabinets fitted flush with joinery
  • Built-in refrigerator and freezer columns, including dual-compressor units
  • Undercounter refrigerator, freezer and beverage drawers
  • Standalone upright and chest freezers, garage-rated units included
  • Through-door water and ice dispensers, filters and supply lines

Built-In and Integrated Units

Built-in refrigeration hides its condenser behind an upper grille, which is exactly why it clogs unnoticed. On a column that has been running warm for months, a proper condenser service resolves the complaint more often than any part does. Access takes longer than on a freestanding cabinet, and that time is in the quote before you approve it.

Refrigerator Brands We Service

Technicians are assigned by brand, not by postcode — a Sub-Zero-class column and a mass-market French-door unit need different documentation and different parts channels.

Sealed Systems and When a Repair Is Worth It

Sealed-system work is quoted separately because the gap is large and you should see which one you are agreeing to. Two things we check before quoting any of it: whether the compressor is still inside a manufacturer warranty — many run five to ten years — and whether the cabinet is worth the repair at all. On an entry-level unit past ten years with a failed compressor, we will tell you to replace it.

Why Choose A+ for Refrigerator Repair

  • Flat price, quoted in writing before a single screw comes out — parts, labour and the diagnostic credit together.
  • Same-day slots held daily. A dead refrigerator is spoilage by the hour, so it moves to the front of the schedule.
  • Warranty on the part and the labour, printed on the invoice rather than described verbally.
  • Condenser serviced on the visit, not sold as an extra: on built-ins it is often the whole repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my refrigerator warm but the freezer still cold?

Cold air is made in the freezer and blown across to the fresh-food side. When that fan fails, or ice blocks the duct, the freezer holds temperature and the fresh side drifts up. It is one of the more affordable refrigeration repairs and it is almost never the compressor.

How long should a refrigerator last?

Ten to thirteen years for mass-market cabinets; twenty and beyond for built-in refrigeration designed to be serviced in place. That difference is why we recommend replacing a failed entry-level unit and repairing a column of the same age.

Is the sealed system worth repairing?

On built-in and premium refrigeration, usually yes — against a five-figure replacement it is straightforward value. On a budget freestanding cabinet past ten years, usually not, and we say so at the diagnosis rather than after parts are ordered.

My ice maker stopped but the fridge is fine. Same visit?

Yes, and it is worth mentioning when you book so the technician arrives with inlet valves and a fill-tube heater on board. Ice faults are usually water supply, not the ice maker module.

Do you service garage refrigerators and freezers through the winter?

Yes. A unit that is not garage-rated will stop cooling once the surrounding air drops below its rating — the thermostat simply never calls for cooling. That is a specification problem rather than a fault, and we will tell you which one you have.
