Two Cycles to Dry a Load Is an Airflow Problem
This is the most misdiagnosed appliance fault we attend, and the instinct is always the same: it must be the heating element. In the large majority of these visits the element is fine. The dryer is making plenty of heat — it cannot move that heat, and the moisture with it, out of the drum.
A dryer is a fan with a heater attached. Restrict the exit and the whole system stalls: clothes stay damp, cycles run long, and the machine gets hot enough that its own safety devices start cutting the heat. That is why every dryer repair we do begins at the vent and not at the parts catalogue.

The Two-Minute Check Before You Call
Run the dryer on heat, go outside and hold a hand over the vent hood. You should feel a strong warm push — enough to lift the flap firmly. Weak flow, or a flap that barely moves, and the machine is not your problem.
- The lint filter. Dryer sheets leave a waxy film that water will not pass through. Wash the screen with soap and a brush.
- The transition hose. Foil hose crushed against the wall when the dryer was pushed back is the single most common restriction we find.
- The duct run. Long basement runs with several elbows collect lint faster than owners expect; every elbow costs several feet of straight duct in resistance.
- The exterior hood. Lint packed around the flap, a nest, or a flap painted shut.
In the older housing around Glen Ellyn and Wheaton, a basement dryer often vents thirty feet to daylight. Nine times out of ten a «no heat» call on those runs is airflow.
When It Really Is the Machine

One detail matters commercially: on most machines the thermal fuse blows because the vent was restricted. Replacing the fuse without clearing the duct means it blows again within weeks. A technician who fits a fuse and leaves has not finished the job.

Once a year for a normal run, more often if the duct is long, has several elbows, or the household does a lot of laundry. It is the cheapest maintenance in the house and the one with an actual fire risk behind it.

On a gas dryer that is the classic valve coil failure: the coils get hot, lose their magnetism and stop holding the valve open. Inexpensive part, routine repair.
Is a ventless heat-pump dryer worth repairing?
Usually yes — they cost considerably more to replace and most faults are the heat exchanger, filters or a sensor rather than the sealed system. Neglected secondary filters cause most of the long-cycle complaints we see.
Can you fix a dryer that trips the breaker?
Yes, and we treat it as a safety call. A dryer tripping a breaker usually means a shorted element or a damaged supply cord, and neither should be reset and ignored.
